Lax Kw'alaams reduces access to the community
In their latest response to the COVID-19 situation, the Lax Kw'alaams Administration, Council and Emergency Response Coordination office have issued a number of Advisories to Residents that outline a range of new enforcement measures.
One statement pertains to the Ferry Service between Prince Rupert and Lax Kw'alaams. noting the importance of the Ferry Service as an essential service for the community and how these measures have been designed to ensure that Lax Kw'alaams priorities are met.
Towards the reduction in transmission and evolution of COVID-19 in the community Ferry crews continue to support a rigorous cleaning routine and have put in place passenger area limitations.
Earlier in the day, Lax Kw'alaams Mayor Garry Reece had issued a number of other directives for residents.
Among those measures were:
All non-residents will not be allowed to enter the community. Ferry personnel will restrict and enforce this decision.
Non-residents currently in the community are permitted to remain, but once they leave they will not be allowed re-entry.
Senior travel to Rupert for groceries is stopped. You may go on your own but we have suspended the seniors’ bus. We do not wish to encourage travel.
The Band will be purchasing significant groceries, primarily for seniors. Please respect this food bank. Don’t be selfish, restrict what you get. Think of your community.
Other residents are asked to restrict travel to Rupert for groceries and essentials. If you can do your shopping here, please use that option.
The pool and gym will close immediately.
The office is closed in the morning. Public is allowed to come in during the afternoon only until further notice. Please only come in if absolutely necessary.
Essential services will continue (water, sewer, garbage)
All schools are closed until further notice.
