British Columbia Premier John Horgan introduced a range of measures on Wednesday designed to offer relief for renters and landlords across the province, announcing a halt on evictions and introducing new temporary rental supplements and a freeze on rents.
“With lost jobs and lost wages due to COVID-19, many tenants are worried they can’t make the rent. It’s a challenging time for landlords too. Nobody should lose their home as a result of COVID-19. Our plan will give much-needed financial relief to renters and landlords. It will also provide more security for renters, who will be able to stay in their homes without fear of eviction or increasing rents during this emergency.” -- Premier John Horgan
The new renters supplement will help British Columbia households by offering up to $500 a month towards their rent, the financial assistance builds on a range of financial support programs introduced by both the Federal and Provincial governments.
The new temporary rent supplement will provide up to $500 per month, paid directly to landlords.
The scope of the program that was introduced on Wednesday looks as follows:
In addition to those measures and in support of assistance to renters and landlords, the Residential Tenancy Branch will implement several additional actions, including adjourning and rescheduling hearings in situations where people need additional time to prepare, as well as to extend timelines for filing applications for dispute resolution.
