Public Hearing for 9th Avenue West housing plans set for June 12th

Residents of Prince Rupert and the Ninth Avenue West area in particular
will learn more
next month  related to a proposed housing
development plan for city owned land
adjacent to PRMS.

The latest proposal towards reducing some of the housing crunch in Prince Rupert will see a full review next month, with the City announcing that a Public Hearing towards plans for housing on 9th Avenue West at Lisa Walters Drive will take place in the Council Chamber at 6 PM on Monday, June 12th prior to the Regular City Council session that night.

The Public Hearing announcement was relayed through the City of Prince Rupert Social Media feed and Civic website on the Thursday.

As we outlined on Thursday, Prince Rupert City Council members had their first opportunity to discuss the proposed housing at this week's Council session.

Among those to comment on the Housing proposal was Councillor Nick Adey, who noted that the School District also had plans for the immediate area, referencing the much discussed, much anticipated,  but yet to be finalized plans for a new Middle School.

At the Tuesday Council session, City Manager Rob Buchan observed that the city would be reaching out to the School District  towards the proposed housing plans on the city owned land that will be sold to the developer and any impact it may have towards access and access implications.

Councillor Cunningham's question towards what type of housing is in mind, elicited little more than a note that it would be market housing, though unclear as of yet if it would be rental or for sale.

As part of Tuesday's Council session, the Agenda for the night included some drawings of the proposed structure that would provide for five storeys and 40 units of housing in the area.

Much of the background towards the plans will become more clear come June 12th and the Public Hearing.

As the Notice of the Public Hearing advises, those who may wish to comment on the proposed development can do so in person at the hearing or by correspondence.

All submissions (mailed, or electronic) must be received by Rosamaria Miller, Corporate Administrator by no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9th, 2023.

You are asked to mail your submission to City of Prince Rupert, 424 3rd Avenue West Prince Rupert, B.C. V8J 1L7 or email to rosamaria.miller@princerupert.ca.
