MLA's Week: October 16-19, 2023



The Members of the Legislature made a return to the Chamber following their one week Thanksgiving Break, with a number of Bills moving forward and discussion on a range of themes.

The week one of discussion on Environmental management for both Skeena MLA Ellis Ross and North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice.

The Skeena MLA was the most active Northwest member in the Chamber this week, speaking to homelessness in the Northwest, the Police Act changes that are planned as well as to provide a tribute to recently passed Kitselas leader Mel Bevan.

Of note on provincial themes in Prince Rupert, the recent announcement of plans to build a roundabout in the community generated some significant discussion.


The provincial Stronger BC program was also noted for its participation in the Prince Rupert Port Authority's plans for a new Export Logistics terminal


This was also Shake out week for BC, with earthquake drills held across the province

On the week, Ms Rice was mentioned once for the week in the  Legislature from October 16-19, 2023.


Wednesday afternoon the MLA participated in the Legislature debate on Bill 29, which is related to changes to how the Province addresses Environmental Management in BC.


The North Coast MLA is also a member of the Following committees:





The MLA Is also Deputy Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Public Accounts 

Ms. Rice serves as the Government's Parliamentary Secretary for Rural health.

The North Coast MLA also addressed a range of themes and relayed  a number of government announcements through her Social Media Stream.

For our readers from the Terrace-Kitimat region, Skeena MLA Ellis Ross  was mentioned six times in the record for the week in the Legislature from October 16-19, 2023.

Two of those instances were introductions in the Thursday morning session and Wednesday afternoon session, where the MLA noted of visitors in the Legislature Gallery

In the Wednesday afternoon Session,  Mr. Ross paid tribute to the late Mel Bevan the Kistelas leader who passed away this month.


Later in the Wednesday session, the MLA took part in the discussion over the government's plans for Environmental Management legislation.


In the Tuesday Afternoon session, Mr Ross participated in the discussion related to the Police Act in BC, his contribution can be viewed from the Legislature vote archive starting at 5:45 PM

Monday afternoon, the topic of Homelessness was the theme for the Skeena MLA, who outlined the impact of homelessness in Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert and other communities.


Mr. Ross serves as the BC United critic on LNG and Energy

The Skeena MLA has not been named to any of the Standing Committees for this session.

The Skeena MLA also addressed a range of themes  featured as part of the MLA's social media work.

For our readers from the Bulkley Valley area, Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen  was not mentioned once  in the record for the week in the  Legislature from October 16-19, 2023.


Mr. Cullen serves as the Government's Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship.

The MLA did have numerous appearances over the last four days related to the work of his Ministerial duties.

The Stikine MLA also had comments on a range of themes through his Social Media stream this week
