City Councillor pleased to hear of progress for oft delayed launch of 'Situation Table' in Prince Rupert

An initiative that was first introduced to Council in 2017, is getting closer to delivery following a few years of starts and stops over the last seven years.

Tuesday night, Prince Rupert Council members received a report from Veronika Stewart, Manager of Communications, Engagement and Social Development; Joyce Charlton, Victim Services Manager .

The three page review (available on the City Agenda page) provided some background on the initiative which at its core is designed to redirect at-risk individuals away from potential involvement of the criminal justice system and towards more appropriate social, housing and mental health supports.

The launch of the program in Prince Rupert comes by way of grant funding of $42,000.

There was no indication as to when the City would be seeking out a Chair and Co-Chair for the Prince Rupert situation table, or a timeline as to when the initiative is expected to be in place.

Councillor Nick Adey offered up his enthusiasm towards the initiative, the Council member has been on of the largest supporters of the program on Council. Towards its progress he noted.

"I would just like to highlight the Situation Tables item.

I remember I think it was the first meeting I attended as a newly elected councillor some four and a half years ago, was to do with establishing a Situations Table program.

And I've learned since that public governance often is the exercise of patience.

So events have intervened as the report suggests including COVID of course.

So I am delighted to see that back up and on the table for some progress, because it's a really good idea"
