Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven introduced a motion to proclaim the month of September as a Month for National Truth and Reconciliation in Prince Rupert |
Prince Rupert City Council has declared the month of September as A month for National Truth and Reconciliation.
The declaration coming following a presentation from Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven towards the topic, in his comments the councillor spoke of how Reconciliation themes have been marked elsewhere and the importance of the end of the month event.
"I just want to acknowledge, this is the only council meeting his month, but just to remind folks that September 30th is for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Other communities kind of take the approach ... around thirty days of reconciliation in the month of September.
So there's a lot of different pieces that I can kind of think of around new fiscal relationships as well as moving beyond reconciliation by definition it's to make one view compatible with another, which is just kind of an Oxford way of saying we get along. So for us to move beyond those frameworks"
Following his presentation, Council members voted in favour of the declaration.
The Councillors full commentary and councils vote can be reviewed from the city's video archive at the one hour nine minute mark.
As we outlined earlier in the month, Terrace made a declaration and has flown the flag of reconciliation in their communities.
The Flag of Reconciliation has been flying in Terrace through September |
Kitimat also made similar moves in September.
Council did not discus on Tuesday evening, what plans, if any that they may have towards any further observance towards next Friday's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Prince Rupert.
As next Friday is a Day for reflection many provincial and municipal services will be unavailable that day.
