Federal, Provincial and Municipal politicians and First Nation's leaders all made Haida Gwaii their destination for the last week of August, with the community of Daajing Giids, the centre of attention as the official renaming ceremony for the former Queen Charlotte City took place.
The event was chronicled by many of the officials through their social media streams, with MLA's Jennifer Rice, Nathan Cullen and Taylor Bachrach all sharing a few thoughts and some photos of the event.
The event on Wednesday, August 31st was co-hosted by the Daajing Giids council and the Haida Nation, as well as the regional political representation, Premier John Horgan and Indigenous Relations Minister Murray Rankin were in attendance.
A number of Haida Chiefs, representatives and matriarchs were also part of the official ceremony to celebrate the change of name for the community
The Official Ceremony followed the formal announcement of the name change back in July when the Province announced the confirmation of the name change.
The momentum for the name change came from a May Council Session for the then Village of Queen Charlotte, where the process of application for the change to Daajing Giids began.
