More campus housing announcements from Province for BC communities; Prince Rupert students still await word of same for local Coast Mountain College campus

With the BC Government putting a large share of its focus on housing during this recent fall session, December has brought an update on some of the provincial government's campus housing plans.

And for a number of communities that means expansion or new builds

While they celebrate in the Comox Valley, Victoria and elsewhere, for Prince Rupert, the prospect of student housing remains mostly a rumour, leaving students and families with students here watching the parade of announcements with some interest.

The roll out of Campus housing options for much of the province has been an impressive one by the BC government in recent years with many spaces in a large number of communities created over the last few years.

Northern British Columbia has seen some additions to housing stock on campus as well, notable among those the recent opening of new Campus housing for the Terrace main campus for Coast Mountain College.

That new housing quickly filled up, with all of the allotments announced as full this past semester.

Still when it comes to the Coast Mountain College campus an hour and a half to the west, the wait continues for some kind of indication that campus housing is coming any time soon.  

It's a quest that goes back to 2014 and the days of Jack Mussallem, and a housing option yet to be delivered in Prince Rupert. 

The need now, even more urgent than those days of the former Mayor. 

The focus for much of the Prince Rupert campus growth in recent years  has come from recruitment of International students. 

A collective which arrives here and immediately discover the challenges that all of the city's residents and the other out of town students of the college face when looking for rental accommodation. 

There were no public announcements to share toward any housing plans following the Coast Mountain College Strategic planning session of September, and really there has been nothing updated on the plans for student housing in over a year.

Making for  little to no indication for students and the public since we last explored the topic in the fall of 2022, as to what is making for the delay in what should be a plan already in motion for a build.

Hopefully, the New Year brings some progress on the campus housing need in Prince Rupert and that some advocacy from local officials and college supporters builds for those attending the college in the community
