Port Edward updates notes of progress on housing plans, upgrades of infrastructure, plans for community picnic

The June greetings for residents of Port Edward from Mayor Knut Bjorndal bring some news on how the District is moving forward on housing options, with a pair of initiatives of note from the mayor's commentary.

In his update for the community he observes how Work has begun on the old trailer court property with the excavation and the preparation on the first eleven properties.

Highlighting how this is welcome news, the mayor notes that District Staff have worked hard on moving this project forward as well as to advise the public to not access the site as construction equipment is working on most of the site and the area is not suitable for public access.

As we outlined in April, at its full completion, the development will see about 30 lots suitable for single family homes.

The work on the Alder Subdivision in Port Edward is underway

Mr. Bjorndal also notes that plans are still moving forward for the old school site to be developed into affordable housing.  He observes for residents how the process to develop affordable housing is quite onerous as provincial and federal agencies are involved, with more updates for the community to follow.

Some infrastructure work is on the horizon for Port Edward as well, with the Mayor making note of plans for work on the upgrades for Sunset Drive this summer, that project is too to go out for tender in the near future.

Other roadwork is planned as well for the community dependent on the success of grant applications.

The District is also in the midst of a Spring Clean up, though the mayor provides an advisory for residents that construction waste is not part of the clean up program for public works.

The District is also Reminding its residents that tax notices are being delivered around the community with the Port Edward deadline for payment set on or before August 2nd, 2022.

The Mayor also provides an update postal service to the community, which will see an increase of five hours overall per week for the local pick up and drop off location

The District has plans to celebrate the start of the Summer season later this month, with a community picnic set for June 18th from 2-5 PM at the Port Edward Community Hall and Park

The District Council meets twice this month, with public sessions to take place June 14th and 28th
