1.1 million dollar project announced for High Speed Broadband connectivity for Lax Kw'alaams

A major infrastructure project for CityWest in the region
was announced today by the BC Government


The Province of British Columbia has announced an investment in High Speed Broadband connectivity for Lax Kw'alaams with the project to be constructed and operated by the City of Prince Rupert owned CityWest.

The announcement today from North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice noted of what the project will bring to Lax Kw'alaams.

“High-speed internet is a game-changer for the people of Lax Kw’alaams, providing the essential tools for work, health care and community engagement. This strategic investment is about ensuring every individual in this community can thrive in the digital age.”


The financial details towards the project look as follows:

The Province will invest as much as $196,600 through the Connecting British Columbia program, administered by Northern Development Initiative Trust. 

The federal government will invest as much as $523,000 through the federal Universal Broadband Fund. 

Service provider CityWest will contribute approximately $423,000.

CityWest CEO Stefan Wołoszyn outlined how the communication company views the parternship with Lax Kw'alaams

“CityWest is deeply rooted in northern B.C., and we are proud to bring improved services to another northern community. We are honoured to partner with the Lax Kw’alaams Band to deliver fibre-optic services in their community together. This project is not just about providing internet, it’s about enriching lives, fostering inclusion, creating opportunities and driving positive change.”

While the full timeline for the project was not outlined today, the project to bring the expanded high speed service to Lax Kw'allams 340 homes will get underway this year.
