City of Prince Rupert submits Transportation Plan for Award Consideration

The City of Prince Rupert is likely hoping to keep on with their Award winning ways of late, with the City seemingly having put the recently adopted Transportation Plan, Connect Rupert  up for consideration in a Provincial Award program.

The City's wide ranging plans for Transportation were created in partnership with Urban Systems and the project is destined for consideration by the Planning Institute of British Columbia and Yukon, submitted in the Small Town and Rural Category.

The Applications window closed on February 12th, with the Planning Institute to announce the successful list of submissions on April 8th.

The annual competition from the PIBC features six categories towards planning for small and large communities in the province.

The awards will be handed out at the 2024 BC Land Summit in Nanaimo from May 8-10

There has been no official notes related to the submission for consideration released by the City.

However, City Hall already has one backer in hand for their quest for a nomination, the submission was endorsed by North Coast Regional District last week at their Monthly meeting in Prince Rupert.

The Connect Rupert plan was adopted by City Council last summer, it provided guidance for future planning of Transportation initiatives  in the City.

You can review the full documentation of the Transportation plan here.

How the various elements of the plan are evolving can be reviewed through the Rupert Talks portal which has a link to their discussion page to the Plan here.

Of note on that ongoing engagement is the current work being done towards a study on making the streets safer for walking and rolling, with the City set to take on an assessment of the  road and sidewalk network in the community.

Implementation of the Transportation plan. by the City will be a gradual process.

At their August Council session, the council members noted of its aspirational reach, but also noted that much of it hinges on available funding in the years ahead.

In 2022 the City of Prince Rupert celebrated two award wins.

One related to the work done on Watson Island, the other in recognition of the Official Community Plan and 2030 Vision program.
