Lax Kw'alaams announces Nomination period to open in October towards November 21st election

While the Metlakatla First Nation closes in on the finish line for their community election period this month, up Tuck Inlet the community of Lax Kw'alaams is preparing for their own Band Council elections, with election organizers announcing the path forward to November 21st.

Yesterday the Lax Kw'alaams Band outlined that the nomination period for their upcoming elections will open on October 3rd, with potential candidates having until October 10th to submit their paperwork and put their name forward for consideration of the voters.

Voters in Lax Kw'alaams and Prince Rupert or those using electronic methods, will be electing Five Trustees and Twelve Members of Council and One Mayor when they cast a vote on November 21, 2023.

Those finding success with the voters, will serve a four year term with the Band Council.

The most recent election provided for a return to office for Mayor Garry Reece, so it will make for some interesting nomination watching to see if there is a challenge put up for the post as part of this election cycle, as well as to what different voices may be heard during the campaign from newcomers to the race for Council and Trustee positions.

When the time to vote comes along on November 21st, balloting will take place in Lax Kw'alaams and Prince Rupert details on that process can be reviewed below:
