The Independent Investigations Office of BC has wrapped up its review into an incident in March of this year in Kitimat.
The agency that reviews police complaints in the province, determining from their work that there is not reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed an offence, noting that the case will not be referred to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges.
The report released this morning retraced the events of March 26th in which Kitimat RCMP members responded to a complaint from a residence on Tweesdmuir Avenue, that guests were intoxicated and refusing to leave.
The report notes that as officers attempted to defuse the situation peacefully, one person was not cooperative and was arrested. In the course of the arrest she was taken to ground and suffered a broken ankle.
The witness statements that were part of the research into the incident were noted as inconsistent or unclear, apparently because some of the witnesses were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The IIO notes also outline that the investigative office does not compel officers who are the subject of an investigation to submit their notes, reports and data. And in this case file, the Subject officer did not provide an account to the IIO.
