Lax Kw'alaams calls on members to become engaged in DFO consultation on Marine Protected areas

The Jim Ciccone Civic Centre is the venue this Wednesday
for a community engagement by DFO on plans for a
Marine Protected area

The Lax Kw'alaams Band Council is looking to see the members of the community fill the Jim Ciccone Auditorium on Wednesday in order  to have their voices heard as DFO continues on with community engagement on themes of Marine Protected areas.

The DFO engagement which takes place from 3 to 8 PM is open to all residents of the north Coast and provides opportunity for those of the region to learn marabout the the Marne Protected area planning.

Of note for the Band who shared their information relay through Facebook, is the potential impact they are alerting their members towards the community fishery and what they view as the lack of a management measures.

The proposed network may seriously impact commercial fisheries through potential closures, but we are not sure what this would look like because there are no management measures in the plan. Because of the lack of information, it is difficult to provide feedback or suggest changes to protect the various fisheries.

If the plan is endorsed, we have no idea what kinds of management measures will be implemented or how they could affect our community.

How DFO views the creation of networks of Marine Protected Areas can be explored further from this report from June of 2017.

More notes on the North Coast Fishery can be reviewed here.

While further background on themes from Lax Kw'alaams is available through our archive page.
