The requirement of a Mayoralty race for the 2022 municipal election may be sparking some increased interest among voters as the campaign period begins to wind down.
With the first advance poll results from October 5th showing that 38 more voters took advantage of the first early voting opportunity than that of four years ago.
The North Coast Review contact the Deputy Electoral Officer Rosa Miller for the snapshot of the first voting opportunity, with results of 401 votes cast in this 2022 advance vote, compared to 363 from 2018.
The 2018 election did not feature a Mayor's race as Mayor Lee Brain was acclaimed to office for his second term when no challengers came forward in the nomination pedis.
This year there are four candidates hoping that their name is atop the list for the Mayor's chair when the final tallies come in Saturday evening.
For those looking to get their votes in prior to Saturday, there is one more Advance Polling opportunity, which comes up tomorrow at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre in the Raven's Youth Lounge.
As well, as we noted in late September, a Special Voting opportunity is set for Thursday for those residents and staff at Acropolis Manor or patients and staff at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital.
The General Voting Day takes place Saturday from 8 AM to 8 PM, with eligible voters able to make their selections for Mayor, City Council and the School District 52 Board of Education.
Prince Rupert has 8,970 voters on the list who are eligible to do their part for democracy for 2022.
The 2018 voting opportunity saw only 2,913 voters take advantage of their right to vote.
Civic election officials have already created the official tally page for the 2022 Vote count, with the page ready to be updated at the closing of the polls on Saturday evening.
