A patch of land on Metlakatla Road in the city's Industrial Park may soon be the location for some demolition work for an abandoned vessel in Port Edward.

A request for a Temporary Land Use Permit to be reviewed at tonight's Prince Rupert Council session, with the Councillors to review the request.

The location (in Blue) requested for a temporary use permit for
the dismantling of the abandoned vessel Fairwind

The main thrust of the request notes of the plan towards the vessel disposal:

To have a shipwrecking yard and store, handle, and sell scrap material on the subject property for up to one year is made to accommodate a potential contract award by the Canadian Coast Guard to dispose of, through ship breaking, the FV Fairwind.

After the removal of all hazardous material from the vessel at its current location at Port Edward, BC, the vessel would be towed to and winched onto the subject property – the latter using pneumatic air bags under the vessel.

The vessel would then be cut up and the resulting scrap metal would be barged to Vancouver, BC for further processing. Contingent on the contract award, it is anticipated that work would begin in late September and last for approximately 3 weeks. No buildings or structures would be used.

The full report for Council can be reviewed below, or through the City Council Agenda package for tonight.

The MV Fairwind is the second of two abandoned vessels that have been an eyesore in Port Edward for years, in January,  the Coast Guard took action to dispose of the Scotch Cap, with the Prince Rupert Port Authority issuing the RFP towards the demolition work last fall.
