Today marks the start of some cable laying to bring the Metlakatla First Nation online with the Connected Coast project, the ambitious program of connectivity currently underway as a joint partnership between Prince Rupert based CityWest and the Strsthchona Regional District.
In an update for community members, The Metlkatla First Nation outlined the three day process of fibre cable laying that gets underway today and continues through to Friday. The MFN noting of what is set to take place in the area of work this week, as well as the monitoring of the Metlakatla Guardians to ensure that environmental and cultural values are protected during the project.
The Connected Coast initiative has also arrived on Haida Gwaii with work on the shore landing that will connect the Islands with the main fibre link running from Prince Rupert to points south. BayLink Networks is handling that work, starting their project in the Tlell area this week.
The much anticipated fibre connection, which will also serve as second source of connectivity for CityWest's service across the Northwest was announced in 2018, with work picking up the pace significantly last year with the arrival of a cable laying vessel which began its work in the Campbell River area of Vancouver Island.
The timeline has a project completion scheduled for sometime in 2023
You can find updates on the project through the Connected Coast website and Social Media feed.
