The topic of why the airlines have yet to provide refunds for Canadians who had to cancel travel arrangements through no fault of their own during this COVID pandemic made for a theme last week for Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach.
With the Northwest MP raising the issue in the February 19th Question Period session.
The main thrust of his question was to ask how the airlines have somehow been able to use the passengers own money as a bargaining chip in airline negotiations with the federal government, with the MP also reminding the government that a number of other nations have already provided for a much more robust level of protection for consumers.
Federal Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra had little to offer in the way of progress for Canadians other than that the topic remains an active one and is still an important aspect of the ongoing discussions.
With travel restrictions still in place for many destinations and limited or eliminated access to air service in many communities including Prince Rupert, most Canadians would much rather have a refund of their cancelled air travel plans than to rebook with a credit for some future time.
