Holding firm in the 400's for new cases of COVID, survey launched to explore impact of pandemic on youth

There was little change in the daily relay of information on COVID cases, with BC registering another day in the low 400's for new cases, with three new deaths to report from the last 24 hours.

Today's report from Doctor Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix also made note of some research underway to determine the impact of the pandemic of the youth of the province.

“Today, we are reporting 427 new cases, including 20 epi-linked cases, for a total of 74,710 cases in British Columbia.

There are 4,150 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. There are 232 individuals currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 63 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation.

Currently, 7,238 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases. A further 69,167 people who tested positive have recovered.

There have been three new COVID-19 related deaths, for a total of 1,317 deaths in British Columbia. We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones to COVID-19."

Across the province, the Health Authorities outlines the daily review as follows:

90 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 236 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 18 in the Island Health region, 47 in the Interior Health region.

There were 31 new cases of COVID reported in the Northern Health region, that total of reported positive cases of COVID to date for Northern BC since January of 2020 is 4,135.

The officials also noted that there were also five new cases of COVID reports by people in British Columbia who reside outside of Canada.

To date, 176,015 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., 26,030 of which are second doses.

Doctor Henry also called attention to a new survey underway to better understand the impact of the pandemic on youth, asking British Columbians to participate

“Researchers continue to monitor and track our progress, to learn from the unique situation that the pandemic has created here in B.C. and around the world. A survey has been launched by the researchers at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, BC Children's Hospital and the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to understand the impacts on the mental well-being of youth.”

The survey is available here.

Earlier in the day the province's top public health official made note of a court ruling on the day related to events and gatherings, in particular those of a religious nature, observing that she would be awaiting the larger court case set to take place in March before exploring the issue further.
