The final briefing of the week from the BC Government provided for a mixed overview of the status of the response to COVID in the province, today's numbers showing a decline from yesterday's spike, but some concerning news about the growth of COVID variants in British Columbia.
The afternoon briefing today hosted Health Minister Adrian Dix and Dr. RĂ©ka Gustafson who stepped in for Doctor Bonnie Henry.
“Today, we are reporting 508 new cases, for a total of 75,835 cases in British Columbia.
There are 4,486 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. There are 217 individuals currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 61 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.
Currently, 7,699 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases and a further 69,970 people who tested positive have recovered.
There have been six new COVID-19 related deaths, for a total of 1,327 deaths in British Columbia. We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones to COVID-19.
Across the province, the five Health Authorities reported the following case counts for the last 24 hours:
116 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 286 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 22 in the Island Health region, 59 in the Interior Health region,
There were 25 case reports in the Northern Health region, which moves the total to date figure for the Northern BC to 4,252 since January of 2020.
There were no new cases COVID reported in British Columbia from people who reside outside of Canada.
As for the ongoing vaccination effort, the last 24 hours made for a positive burst of vaccinations, to date, 192,942 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., 36,923 of which are second doses.
Among the positive trends on vaccination, 91 percent of the province's long term care residents have now received a COVID shot.
The ongoing concern over variants of the COVID virus made fo some of the discussions today with the public health officials noting that of the new variants making their way around the world.
Currently in British Columbia there have been 72 variant cases reported; 52 of the UK strain, 20 of the South African strain.
