Witness Blanket Open House this evening at Lester Centre for the Arts

The Witness Blanket is nearing the end of its stop in Prince Rupert
with an Open House to view the powerful piece of art on
the Legacy or Residential schools set for today 

Residents of the North Coast can explore the powerful imagery of the Witness Blanket this evening with the touring presentation from Artist Carey Newman to be presented in an Open House from 4 to 6PM at the Lester Centre of the Arts.

It has been on display  in the Lobby of the Lester Centre  since its arrival on May 9th and those attending Lester Centre events will have until May 29th to view it outside of tonight's Open House.

The touring exhibit of the work of art has been sent across the country through the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, with its travelling mission statement that of:

The Witness Blanket stands as a national monument to recognize the atrocities of the Indian residential school era, honour the children, and symbolize ongoing reconciliation.

We outlined some of the background to the project last week as part of our review of the SD52 May Board meeting, with the Board members provided the details through  a presentation from Roberta Edzerza and Lori Burger noting the journey of the program that came to Prince Rupert and how the Witness Blanket had been incorporated into lesson planning at the District.
