Weekend visit by Federal Transport Committee to Prince Rupert provides glimpse of trade corridor importance, along with challenges for communities that are home to facilities

A number of members of the Federal Standing Committee on Transport had an opportunity to gain a first hand look at how the Port of Prince Rupert operates and the  importance to the nation of the volume of goods that pass through the range of port facilities on the Prince Rupert waterfront.

With Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach providing for some of the tour guide services, the listing members of the committee had a chance to sit in with PRPA officials to hear more about the investments being made into port facilities that will add to the volume of cargo handled and help to diversify the Port's footprint.

The visitors also had a close up look at some of the facilities by way a boat tour hosted by the Port which explored some of the waterfront infrastructure.

Mr. Bachrach also provided for some additional work for the committee, which had an opportunity to meet with Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond, City council members and senior staff members to hear of some of the challenges that being he home of a large port can bring to small municipalities faces.

That session offering a review of a range of topics that the Federal Committee can use as background as they to their duties in Ottawa that oversee such Departments as the Ministry of Transport and Federal infrastructure which have some say over how Port facilities are developed.

The Prince Rupert visit was the last of what has been a tour of Ports across Canada from the East to West coasts over the last few weeks.

So far the MP who has been somewhat busy over the last few days, has yet to provide constituents with some Cole's Notes on the Committee visit and what they may have taken away from their weekend stopover in Prince Rupert.
