Mr. Bachrach was appointed as the NDP's deputy critic for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coastguard, which will make for a tag team approach to the issues of the Fisheries as he serves alongside Lisa Marie Barron the Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP who serves as the NDP critic, the focus for the pair will be protect Canada's oceans, Marine ecosystems and coastal jobs.
For the new Deputy Critic, his priorities wil focus on fisheries reconciliation, owner-operator reforms, science-based decision making, and better federal consultation with affected communities.
He will also support the NDP priorities of getting salmon farms out of the ocean, and protecting B.C.'s coast from shipping container spills and cruise ship dumping.
Towards those themes, the Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP is enthusiastic towards the work ahead.
“Our ocean and watersheds are a precious legacy and while fisheries issues are complex, I believe we have an opportunity to come together around a vision of restored abundance. That’s what makes me excited about this work: the idea that if we make good decisions, future generations will be able to benefit and thrive on our coasts and rivers.”
Bachrach will continue to serve as the NDP critic on Transport issues, most recently his themes of interest have been towards the air industry and the lack of support for airline customers and air travellers passing through Canadian airports.
The new posting was announced follow the weekend IMPAC5, global marine planning conference conference in Vancouver. Adjacemt to that event a new coastal refuge at the southern end of the Central Coast was created, the new area includes a closure to all fisheries.
