Council selects Two Reconciliation participants as next phase of process to begin

Communication Manager Veronika Stewart updated City Council
on the progress on the city's  Reconciliation initiative

Prince Rupert City Council has nominated Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven and Councillor Teri Forster to be the council representatives in the ongoing process of developing a Reconciliation framework for the community.

The announcements came following a brief overview of the process to date from Veronkia Stewart the City's Manager of Communications, Engagement and Social Development.

"This recommendation is that council support the development of a Reconciliation/UNDRIP committee terms of reference through a process of table top discussions with Indigenous leaders and supported by staff and also that council delegate one or two councillors to participate in the table top discussion ... this speaks to the priority that Council set in the strategic plan to continue the implementation of the Reconciliation framework and prior to developing a terms of reference committee, we wanted to make sure that we had adequate community input into that process"

Ms. Stewarts comments were a follow up to a report delivered to Council previous to their Tuesday evening session, which provided some background on what is next for the process.

As we outlined yesterday, the process of the Reconciliation journey began last October when Council outlined how its Framework program would move forward.

Other than a question from Councillor Adey related to how many council members were required for the initiative and enthusiasm for it from Councillors Forster and Skelton-Morven, the remaining council members had no queries or comments related to the report.

Ms. Forster did follow up with a question related to the city's dedication to being an equal opportunity employer.

"I do believe that there is statement, but I don't believe that there is a boarder policy that informs that statement, so one of the purposes would be to flesh out that policy" -- Communication Manager Veronika Stewart

You can review Ms. Stewart's presentation and the short follow up to it from the Council Video starting at the 16 minute, 45 second mark.
