Two Prince Rupert sports organizations will share in some provincial funding directed towards relief from the impact of COVID-19.
With the Prince Rupert Skating Club and Prince Rupert Amateur Swim Club joining 20 other sports organizations in Northern BC for a share of the 1.5 million that has been made available across British Columbia.
In a statement released today, North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice observed as to the importance that the provincial government has put on local sport groups as British Columbians travel through these times of COVID.
“Our government recognizes the important role local sport organizations provide in their communities, including Prince Rupert. During COVID-19, physical activity is more important for our mental health and well-being than ever. At the same time, the pandemic has caused severe financial setbacks for many local sport organizations. This funding will help sport clubs regain financial footing, so they can continue to offer activities for everyone.”The BC government notes that many clubs have had limited ability to offer programming and fundraise to cover expenses, and without assistance may be at risk of having to close.
As part of today's overview of the program the province outlined how this flight of applications was reviewed and what the funding can be put towards, as well as some hope for other groups, who may wonder if there will be a period to apply in the future.
The Local Sport Relief Fund covers administration and operational costs for local sports organizations dealing with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible expenses include insurance, administrative costs, rent, storage costs, equipment essential to providing sports programs and COVID-19 related supplies, such as cleaning products, signage and personal protective equipment.
Given the significant number of applications received for the initial Local Sport Relief Fund, the ministry is considering other opportunities to support the sport sector.
