Northern Health offers support for Complete Streets for Prince Rupert
The goal of safer streets and designs that offer encouragement for residents to become more active outside make for some of themes from a Northern Health endorsement for a local civic action group.
On Tuesday, Complete Streets for Prince Rupert received the public support of the Northern Health Agency, with Dr. Rakel Kling, the NW Medical Health Officer noting how Complete Streets would make a significant contribution toward the goal of a healthier Prince Rupert.
In the letter of support, Dr Kling observes how "when streets have been designed to facilitate physical activity, the whole community benefits."
The Complete Streets For Prince Rupert group have been fairly busy in recent weeks moving forward their goals for a safer community.
As we outlined last week, the group was successful in receiving the support from City Council for a motion that will see Prince Rupert join the list of Healthy Living Communities on the Move in British Columbia.
The local group has also continued its advocacy towards improving safety on Prince Rupert's streets, particularly in the downtown area, which has seen a number of pedestrian/vehicle incidents in the last year.
Most recently the organization called attention to an award winning report from Prince Rupert student Jack McLean who explored the safety of community crosswalks.
Mr., McLean a student at Lax Kxeen Elementary won the Silver prize at the 2019 Pacific Northwest Regional Science Fair for his study.
You can review some of their ideas and learn how you can become engaged with their work through the Complete Streets for Prince Rupert website, Facebook page and twitter feed.
