Members of the Lax Kw'alaams Band will be casting their votes on proposed changes to the community's Custom Election Code on July 18th, with registered community residents that are on file already in possession of their referendum ballots
The Referendum Vote will take place in two locations, with voting taking place at the Elders Lodge in Lax Kw'alaams, as well as the Lax Kw'alaams Business Development office in Prince Rupert.
The referendum vote takes place from 8 AM to 8 PM
Those participating in the referendum process will be asked to review the 25 proposed amendments to the Custom Code, the information related to those amendments has been forwarded every member of the community who is at 18 years or above.
Some of the key amendments towards the code include:
Using independent arbitrators for electoral and conduct disputes
Implementing a progressive discipline process for all Council members
Offering electronic voting
Requiring Criminal record checks for Councillors
Changes in both quorum and the starting point for referendums
Continuation of the current number of members of the Band Council
