Prince Rupert's Friendship House will share in Federal funding for MMIWG commemoration and advancement of reconciliation |
Prince Rupert's Friendship House will join many other organizations in commemoration of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and advance reconciliation.
The Prince Rupert organization was mentioned as part of an announcement from the Federal Government today that outlines the scope of the 13 million dollar initiative that will run over two years; it will deliver funding that will be used to help honour the lives and legacies of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, including LGTBQ and Two Spirit people.
The funding is part of the Federal Governments response to the recent work MMIWG Commission and comes from a call for proposals launched by Minster Monsef under the Commemoration Fund in February.
“Our government is listening to survivors and families who have told us that in order to move forward meaningfully, we must also pause to remember and honour those who are missing and whose lives have been lost. That is what we are doing by supporting these commemorative projects across Canada – ensuring that we will never forget our sisters in spirit and that we can prevent such tragedies in the future.” -- The Honourable Maryam Monsef, P.C., M.P. Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality
More background on the federal funding can be reviewed here and here.
So far there is no indication as to what amount of funding will be made available to the Prince Rupert Friendship House, or what form of commemoration that funding will be put towards.
