For Regional District, the road leads to Port Edward this weekend for monthly meetings
The Directors of the North Coast Regional District will be exploring the North Pacific Cannery Historical site this weekend, as working getaway takes their monthly Regional District meetings to the iconic historical site on the shoreline of Inverness Passage.
There are four sessions planned for Friday and Saturday June 21 and 22, two in Prince Rupert and two in Port Edward; with a Regular District Meeting and a Committee of the Whole session to go along with the Hospital District meeting and session for the Electoral Area Advisory Committee.
Friday night the Directors kick off their weekend in Port Edward with the Regular meeting for the Regional District with a Four page Agenda which covers a range of material for them to cover.
As the group will be gathered at North Pacific, a timely report providing an update on the historical site will make for the first item of the evening's work.
From there the Directors will receive some financial overviews, including the Statement of Financial Information which outlines the salaries and expenses of elected officials and those staff members making over $75,000.
A string of correspondences will be reviewed as sell as reports and bylaws.
When it comes to New Business, among the items for review will be a call for support towards the Gitga'at First Nations plans for their Community Hall in Prince Rupert, the opportunity to provide feedback to the province related to a Wind Project by Naikun Wind Development and an application by the Metlakatla First Nation to seek out funding from NDIT toward repair of the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail project.
You can review the full Agenda for Friday's meeting here.
Earlier in the day on Friday the Regional District will hold an Electoral Area Advisory Committee meeting, see agenda here.
Also on Friday, the Regional Hospital District will meet, where they will review a report on the proper disposition of surplus funds, following the dissolution of the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional Hospital District.
Both of those will be hosted at their Prince Rupert meeting space on Second Avenue West.
At Saturday's Committee of the Whole Session from Port Edward, the Directors will review a report on the possible uses for the Northern Capital and Planning grant, 1.712 million dollars in funding that was allocated to Regional District by the Provincial government earlier this year.
Six items have been flagged for potential funding from that money they include:
Landfill Closure costs and other landfill issues, Roof repairs for the Regional Recycling Depot,
Work on the Sandspit Water System, as well as to develop reserves for both the Sandspit and Oona River Community Halls.
A range of other options have bee floated as well, you can review the list here.
A review of the 2019-22 Strategic Priorities is also on the agenda as part of the Saturday session.
Any members of the public that may be in attendance at the 10AM event will also have opportunity to comment if they desire.
The trip from Prince Rupert to the North Pacific Cannery may give the Regional Directors a chance to view first hand some of the current areas of tension between member communities Prince Rupert and this weekend's host of Port Edward.
The majority of the areas of concern are tied into the ongoing dispute over the distribution of Ridley Island Tax revenues, a topic of significant interest for Mayor Lee Brain and Prince Rupert Council.
