Metlakatla outlines process ahead for 2023 Election period

The campaigning towards a position on the Metlaktla First Nation Council will be a summer long event, with Election officials from the community across the harbour from Prince Rupert outlining the path to elected office today.

The first step the calling of a Nomination meeting for July 12th from 1 to 4 PM at the Metlaktla Administration Building.

The advisory for interested applicants also includes some of the requirements for the candidates.

Included on the list, written declarations of eligibility, criminal record checks and avadavats/declarations.

By Mid July, candidates are also required to provide a non refundable deposit of one hundred dollars.

Those seeking office can run for either Chief Councillor or Councillor but not for both positions.

Election Day is September 29th from 9AM to 8PM, with voting to take place both in Metlakatla and in Prince Rupert.

Electors will be casting ballots for one (1) Chief and six (6) Councillors

That full information package from Metlaktla officials is available for review here.

That September 29th date will be the rendezvous of destiny for current Prince Rupert City Council member Reid Skelton-Morven.

As we outlined earlier this week, the city council member announced his candidacy for Chief Councillor through social media and with an announcement at the end of the Monday City council session.

Should the voters of Metlakatla deliver him his next political mission at the end of September, Mr. Skelton-Morven would then step down from Municipal politics in Prince Rupert.

That would trigger a municipal by-election to fill his post on the Prince Rupert City Council.

He would however continue with his municipal council work should the Metlakatla vote count not deliver the next step of his political journey.

You can keep up with the candidate announcements and the Metlakatla election themes from their website and social media stream.

Some of our past notes from the community can be reviewed here.
