With Tsunami Preparedness activities ahead next week, British Columbians are being asked to review how they prepare for Tsunamis

Next week, coastal communities in British Coulombia are going to be asked to give a review to their Tsunami Preparedness planning, with April 9-15 having been declared Tsunami Preparedness Week.

"We know it’s scary to think about emergencies like tsunamis, but by getting prepared and learning about the tsunami risk in your community now, you’ll be safer in the event of a tsunami. Tsunami Preparedness Week is the perfect time to put together an emergency kit for your family and practise evacuating to a tsunami-safe location in your community.” -- Bowinn Ma, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.

As part of the week long work of preparation, Prince Rupert will be among a number of communities that will be hosting a High Ground Hike, the events offer residents the opportunity put in practice their plan to reach a tsunami safe location in the community.

Further background on the High Ground Hike is available here.

More notes on the week of preparation will come next week as activities get underway.

To get you started in your own planning, the province offers up the following notes on how to prepare for the day where practice becomes a real time event.

More on the planning for next week can be reviewed here.

The Province also has provided some links towards tsunami preparation for British Columbians to study up on.

A look at past preparation events and the seismic activity of the North Coast, Haida Gwaii and coastal BC can be reviewed through our archive page.
