Residents of Lax Kw'alaams both on reserve and living in urban communities such as Prince Rupert are about to head down a path towards developing a constitution and then further work towards self-government, with the first steps towards those initiatives underway this month.
The process of consultation was outlined earlier this week through the Band website and social media stream and notes of how they are looking to better understand the current knowledge of Lax Kw'alaams members on themes of First Nations constitutions and how they are developed.
Towards that engagement they have put together some information packages for members to access through a number of locations which include the Lax Kw'alaams Band Office, Lax Kw'alaams Clinic and Recreation Centre as well as their Prince Rupert Office.
A version of the full documentation is also available here for those wishing to view the project online

Towards the process of engagement the Band notes that your answers are confidential and will help Lax Kw’alaams Mayor, Council and Tribal Leaders develop a constitution.
As well, If you wish to be entered in a draw to win a gift card, please fill in your contact information on the survey.

There's no indication as to what kind of timeline is being considered for both the consultation process and then the evolving process of a Constitution, or steps towards wider self governance, areas which most likely will be explored further through future correspondences.
Further information on their plans will be relayed through the Lax Kw'alaams social media stream.
More notes on themes from Lax Kw'alaams can be reviewed from our archive page.
