Prince Rupert area harbours to share in Federal funding for small harbours improvements

The Fairview Small Craft Harbour is one of three locations
in Prince Rupert/Port Edward set to see some improvements
after Federal funding was announced this week

Eleven million dollars is on the way for small harbour facilities in the Prince Rupert area, the funding part of close to a Fifty million dollar investment in small craft harbours by the Federal government.

On Tuesday, the Government of Canada outlined the scope of the two year funding program that will renew 26 small craft harbours in the province.

The harbour program was part of the Federal Government budget of earlier this year and it will mean some extensive repair work for three facilities in Port Edward and Prince Rupert, all three facilities are operates by the Port Edward Harbour Authority.

The work on the North Coast includes:

Float reconstruction at Port Edward Harbour; float and breakwater repairs at Fairview Harbour; and breakwater mooring repairs at Rushbrook Harbour.

The government notes how the infrastructure projects will help ensure that this important Northern British Columbia fishing hub continues to serve the loading, moorage and offloading needs of Pacific commercial and Indigenous fishing fleets.

The remainder of the Federal funding will see 12 million dollars allocated for work at Richmond's Steveston harbour, as well as 22 million dollars to be shared by 24 other communities along the BC coast.

Oona River, Port Clements and Queen Charlotte are also on the list of those communities set to receive funds from the Feds.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan handled the rollout of the program with comments from the Steveston harbour on Tuesday.
