City of Prince Rupert sets August 23rd for Public Hearing on proposed apartment complex for 11th Avenue East

A chance to speak to a proposed rezoning of land to
allow for a 70 unit apartment building on the city's east side
is set for August 23rd with City Council to host a Public hearing

Residents of the 11th Avenue East/Edwards Avenue area and others with an interest in the proposed development of an apartment complex on the city's east side will have their chance to have their say on August 23rd.

That's the date that Prince Rupert City Council and staff have selected for the Public Hearing towards the project, the latest step for the at times controversial plan to develop a seventy unit building by the Lax Kw'alaams Band for their membership living in Prince Rupert.

The Public Hearing which is officially noted as a hearing towards a Zoning Amendment Bylaw, will take place at the Lester Centre starting at 6PM.

The purpose of the proposed amendment that of rezoning the subject property from its current status of Two Family Residential Zone to Multi-Family Residential Zone, and to establish the maximum principal building heigh as 23 metres, along with the inclusion of Seniors Housing.

The Lester Centre of the Arts will be the venue for a
public hearing related to the proposed 11th Avenue
Apartment project on August 23rd

Council set the process of the Public hearing in motion at the end of July, at that time Councillor Nick Adey noted that there could be some significant interest in the city's hearing plans, suggesting at the time that Council may wish to host the event at a later venue, the shift to the Lester Centre followed up on that guidance.

At the July session Council reviewed a report from the city's contract planners from iPlan, which offered some background on the evolution of the proposed development, addressing some previous concerns over traffic impacts and reserving 12 of the units for seniors housing only.

A look at some of our recent notes on the proposed development can be reviewed below:

May 5 -- April's Lax Kw'alaams Housing proposal presentation for 11th Avenue East is now available online
May 3 -- Architect of the proposed Lax Kw'alaams Apartment complex on 11th named as a 2021 Architectural award winner

Some of the previous review of the proposed housing plan can be explored from our notes from April,  which tracked the path of the Lax Kw'alaams led project.

Unlike the Mayor's recent heads up through Social Media on plans for a leasing opportunity for the CN Heritage building on the waterfront, the Public Hearing notice for the 11th Avenue rezoning so far is only listed in the back pages of the weekly newspaper.

To this point the City has not relayed their plans through their range of online information and Social Media options.
