While Lax Kw'alaams Band officials await word on the progress for their Prince Rupert housing plans, the community north of Tuck inlet now has ten more affordable rental housing units in place that update on the housing coming from an announcement from David Eby today.
In a statement from this morning, the Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing outlined the partnership that the province is building with communities across BC.
“With the opening of these homes, more Lax Kw’alaams families will be able to stay in their home community, surrounded by their culture and tradition. We will continue to work in partnership with First Nations, Indigenous leaders and Indigenous housing providers to build homes just like these, while calling on the federal government to match our funding to build even more much-needed housing for Indigenous peoples, both on- and off-reserve.”As for the units, the project has been developed at 194-228 Mountainview Drive and includes two two-bedroom, four three-bedroom and four four-bedroom units for Lax Kw’alaams families in the community.
Each home has living, dining, laundry and kitchen areas.

Lax Kw'alaams Mayor Garry Reece hailed the housing as an example of governments working well together.
"The project provides our families much-needed housing options. Families can now remain in Lax Kw’alaams, thereby staying close to their community and their lifestyle. The partnership between the Province and Lax Kw’alaams is a great example of how governments can work together to build affordable housing.”
