British Columbia continues to tread a bit of water in the pool of COVID data this week, with today's update of the case count from across the province making note of just under 600 cases for the day, with today's reviewing making note of a jump in those who have passed away over the last 24 hours.
The presentation from Doctor Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix also featuring a data presentation on the progress of the vaccination program in BC (including a note on Prince Rupert) and how it is having an impact on the volume of cases that Health officials are now finding across the province.
“Today, we are reporting 587 new cases, including one epi-linked case, for a total of 137,810 cases in British Columbia.
There are 5,691 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.
A further 130,310 people who tested positive have recovered.
Of the active cases, 413 individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 141 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.
“There have been five new COVID-19 related deaths, for a total of 1,632 deaths in British Columbia. Our condolences are with the family, friends and caregivers of the people who have died as a result of COVID-19."
Across BC, the Regional Health Authority's reported the following: 126 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 365 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 21 in the Island Health region, 60 in the Interior Health region,
The totals for the Northern health region jumped back into the double digits today, with 15 new cases reported which brings the total number of cases since January 2020 to 7,393 in the northern region.
There were no new cases of COVID reported for people in BC who reside outside of Canada.
Today's vaccination count noted that to date, 2,335,513 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 119,691 of which are second doses.
With today's update making note of a second case of a severe after affect from the AstraZeneca shot.
“While all of our vaccines are safe and effective, there have been a small number of rare but serious adverse events following immunization. We have had a second case of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia following an AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination.
The patient is a male in his 40s. He is in stable condition and receiving care and treatment in the Fraser Health region.
If you have had a vaccine – any vaccine – in the last four to 28 days and are feeling unwell, call 811 or contact your health-care provider so you can get assessed as quickly as possible."
"The important thing here, is even though cases were increasing in the community, at the end of March and through April, into May.
Outside of Prince Rupert, we saw a sustained and low level in Prince Rupert itself.
So this is something that helps us understand what may happen as an entire province once we get to those levels of immunization.
