MLA's Week: May 17-20, 2021

It was a light work week in the actual Legislature Chamber for the three Northwest MLA's, with no appearances listed in the day to day business of the House, though there were other opportunities for comment on a range of themes by the elected officials of the region.

British Columbia's MLA's counted down the days towards the Victoria Day weekend and a one week break from House duties with a controversy nipping at the heels of the John Horgan NDP government; that as the BC Liberals made much political hay out of the government's approach to what may be some long lasting issues over the Alaska Cruise Industry.

The discussion picked up some steam this week as the US Congress moved quickly to pass a bill that will eliminate the need for US cruise ships to have to stop in Canadian waters during the 2021 season, the larger concern that the temporary suspension of the law may become permanent.

It was a topic which North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice had no comments to make towards, but a theme that Skeena MLA Ellis Ross had a fair bit to say on.

The Provincial Government, and Health Minister Adrian Dix in particular will be receiving a correspondence from the Prince Rupert Chamber of Commerce, with the advocates for the local business community calling for a relaxation of COVID related  indoor dining regulations.

As for more on the recent week of work from the House, the four days unfolded as follows:

On the week, Ms Rice was  not mentioned in the record for the week in the Legislature from May 17-20

Most of the MLA's work week however was that of participation in Committee work related to the Ministry of Environment

Mr. Ross is currently the BC Liberal's Opposition Critic for Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
