Prince Rupert Court Vacancy to be filled in August


A vacant seat on the bench at the Prince Rupert Court House has been filled, with the Government of British Columbia appointing Judge David Patterson to the position effective in Mid August.

Judge Patterson received a juris doctor degree from UBC in 1992 and was called to the bar  in British Columbia in 1993. The majority of his legal career has been as a prosecutor, with the Judge also set to bring experience in criminal defence, family law, real estate transactions and civil litigation to his northern posting.

The announcement of his appointment was released by Chief Judge Melissa Gillespie on Tuesday.


He became a partner at MTC Law in 2001 and nine years later gave up his criminal law practice to devote his legal work towards prosecutions, serving the Public Prosecution Service of Canada primarily through work in Surrey, New Westminster and Port Coquitlam court houses.

Serving as the legal agent in those locations, he managed a team of 16 full time federal prosecutors and gained experience in a range of federal prosecutions.

Judge Patterson will be sworn in on August 12th when his assignment to the Northern Region will commence.

He will filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Herman Seidemann, the long time arbitrator of justice at the Prince Rupert Court House brought his 18 years as a judge to a conclusion in June, Judge Seidemann had been part of the British Columbia legal system for 40 years.

Judge Seidemann was one of three Senior Judges serving in the Northern region at the time of his retirement.
