North Coast Regional District shares in Thursday's Wildfire Protection funding announcement from the Province

A second round of grants towards support for wildfire risk reduction projects was rolled out on Thursday by the Provincial government. With money released for a number of projects in the Northwest, including plans from North Coast Regional District.

The North Coast funding will be set at $24,548 and is designed to assist in planning, as we noted earlier this month, North Coast Regional District recently put out a Request for Proposal for a Wildfire Protection plan project for Haida Gwaii.

Doug Donaldson, the Minister of Forests. Lands, Natural Resources and Rural Development made note of the need for planning  and preparation that is required more than ever with the growing threats that are found across the province.

“The last two summers have shown the need for better preparation in advance of wildfire seasons. To help keep people and communities as safe as possible, it’s more important than ever that we invest in programs that reduce the risk.”

North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice also spoke to the need for preparation as part of Thursday's announcement.

“The record-breaking wildfire activity that we’ve experienced in recent years underlines the need to take fire prevention seriously. These new grants will help recipients take another important step to reduce wildfire risks.”

Also receiving funding yesterday were a number of Northwest communities included on the list are the Village of Burns Lake, Lake Babine Nation, Cheslatta Carrier Nation, Glen Vowell, Tahltan Nation.
