NDP make additions to the ranks of Parliamentary Secretaries

John Horgan has called up some reserves to lend a hand around the government ranks at the Legislature, announcing two new Parliamentary Secretaries to the near cabinet ranks, with newly elected MLA Sheila Malcolmson taking on the role of Parliamentary Secretary for Environment.

She will also serve along with Environment and Climate Change Strategy Minister George Heyman to work on the marine debris protection plan, which will focus on addressing marine-sourced plastic debris.

Towards that goal, the NDP government introduced a new initiative to seek feedback to ban, reduce and recycle more plastics in the province.

Also moving to the ranks of Parliamentary Secretary is Ravi Kahlon, who will take on the position of parliamentary secretary for forests, lands, natural resource operations and rural development.

He will be assisting current Minister Doug Donaldson, who has been in the spotlight of late as the
provincial forest industry suffers a number of mill closures and job layoffs, impacting many communities across the province.

Mr. Kahlon will continue on his role with work on human rights and anti-racism.

Anne Kang will add multiculturalism to her position as Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors and continue to lead the provincial government's efforts with practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.

“I would like to congratulate those with new responsibilities. These new roles speak not only to the priorities of our government but also to the incredible team we have working to serve British Columbians.” -- Premier John Horgan.

The NDP government now features eight Parliamentary Secretary positions, including North Coast Jennifer Rice, who remains in her position as Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness
