BC Ferries and the Province of British Columbia have
renewed a service contract to carry through until March of 2024

While it would seem like they probably don't have much of a choice, considering the lack of alternatives available; the Province of British Columbia has announced a renewal of its service contract with BC Ferries, with the new term set to cover a four year term from April 1, 2020 to March 31 2024.

In their announcement of Wednesday, Province made note of increased funding for BC Ferries of 32.5 million dollars to support fare affordability, as well as another 5.8 million dollars annually to support the increase of 2,700 round trips on 10 minor and Northern routes that was announcer earlier this year.

The requirement for service contracts came as a result of the Coastal Ferry Act of 2003,  when BC Ferries was transformed from a government Crown Corporation to an Independent company. The Province of British Columbia provides annual funding to BC Ferries through the contract process.

The full scope of the contract to come into effect in April of next year can be explored here.

The Government's announcement of the new contract can be found here.
