Resolutions of support, BC ferries service and marijuana tax revenue sharing among the notes from Regional District Session

The first meeting of the year for the North Coast Regional District took place in Prince Rupert over two days from January 25 and 26, with the Board covering a range of material to launch their work for 2019.

With Mayor Lee Brain not available for the two days of sessions, the City of Prince Rupert was represented by Councillor Barry Cunningham, who is one of the city's permanent members; along with alternate director Wade Niesh for the two days of meetings.

Among the themes of review was a resolution of support to the City of Prince Rupert to supplement its application to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities Child Care Planning fund in order to undertake a child care inventory and assessment study for the community.

Port Edward received some positive news as well, with the Board providing for a resolution of support for the Port Edward Historical Society's application to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program for capital upgrades to the North Pacific Cannery, a grant opportunity which we reviewed last month.

North Coast Regional District will also be sending out climate responsibility correspondences to twenty of the largest fossil fuel companies in the world. The initiative which has been outlined by the West Coast Environmental Law Group is designed to request that these corporations being to pay for their fair share of planning for and addressing the impacts of climate change.

We expand on that initiative from Regional District here.

Regional District Staff have also been asked to prepare two draft resolutions for submission to the the membership of the North Central Local Government Association as possible resolutions for that organizations convention later this year.

The two resolutions will be composed of elements for discussion related to marijuana tax revenue sharing and BC Ferry Service Levels. The Regional District Board will review the resolutions at their February meeting.

The board also authorized the entrance into an employment agreement with the Regional District's new Treasurer, Ms. Sharon Landrath.
