Council to hear from Select Committee on remuneration tonight

With the start of the Budget Process tonight as part of the final Council session for February, Council members will also hear of the status of the Select Committee on Remuneration, a project that was first outlined by Mayor Lee Brain back in October of last year.

The original plan was for the committee was to explore whether Council members will be getting an increase in their current pay to compensated for the loss of tax free regulation in the national taxation regimen.

Another issue that may be addressed will be whether Mayor Brain will have his compensation level returned to the Full Time status it was prior to the end of the year.

Since January 1st the Mayor has been returned to his original salary level, without the benefit of the additional top up from the planning for major projects funding that was originally used to increase his yearly take home income.

That funding had a sunset clause that saw it come to an end on December 31st, 2018.

The most recent pay scale for the Mayor and Council members was posted as part of the 2018 SOFI report last June.

The original plan was for the Select Standing committee review to have taken place during the fall with a conclusion by the end of last year, at some point however Council decided to tie the project in to the city's budget process for 2019.

A Report For Council has yet to be provided to the City Council Agenda for this evening, once they post the details you will be able to find it from page 7 of the Agenda Package.

You can trace some of the recent history of the Mayor's Select Committee plan below:
