The District of Port Edward brought the year to a close with a glimpse of some plans for 2021, with the Tuesday Council session putting forward three readings towards a new Emergency Program Regulation Bylaw.
As well, with an eye towards increasing the housing stock in the District, Port Edward councillors approved additional requirements for the building of manufactured homes which is currently only allowed in the areas of R2 zoning.
The Council members also charted the course ahead for the release in January of a Request for Proposals towards a 7.25 acre residential development in the Alder Avenue area, with more notes on that to come in the New Year.
The communication company Telus will be receiving a letter of support towards their plans for a two communication towers near Rainbow Lake which will improve Cell phone service in the region.
And two organizations benefitted from some Christmas cheer from the District with donations made to the Salvation Army and the Wildlife Shelter.
December has also brought the monthly newsletter from Mayor Knut Bjorndal, with the Mayor noting of some of the work done by council in 2020 and their hopes for the year ahead.
The opening to his December address reviews some of the challenges and impact on the community from COVID and a call for a bit more patience into the New Year.
As for some of the themes the general overview looks as follows:
"During the past year we made plans and set goals that are now being implemented. We completed major upgrades to the Water Treatment Plant, and signed contracts for the first phase of the road improvements (which will begin in the New Year.)
We also completed an in-depth evaluation of all the buildings and infrastructure that Port Edward owns and initiated projects to move forwards with redevelopment of the Harbourview commercial area, as well as the old trailer court and old school properties for much needed new housing
Next year, 2021 should see more progress on additional road improvements and moving ahead with residential initiatives"
The update which you can access here, also makes note of the Holiday hours for the District Office and services, as well as notes on Transit, the Boat Launch and Public Works.
