The Entrance to Lax Kw'a'alaams harbour will get some dredging
through the start of 2021

Work under the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Small Craft Harbours Program will get underway shortly that will see dredging of the seafloor at the entrance to Lax Kw'alaams Harbour, the purpose of the dredging to all for safer navigation into the docking area on the shoreline.

As part of the work an environmental monitor will be on site at all times to ensure compliance with environmental requirements, with contractors to adhere to specific Health and Safety Plans approved by the Lax Kw'alaams Band Administration, included in the plans are strategies to prevent the possible transmission of COVID-19.

Towards the work ahead, Lax Kw'alaams officials note the following:

Silt curtains will be installed parallel to the channel throughout the project, to protect adjacent eelgrass beds. This will require the entrance channel to be restricted to minimum 10m width for the duration of the project.

The 10m width will allow one-way traffic in and out of Lax Kw’alaams Harbour for the duration of the project.

The depth of the channel will be maintained at -2m chart datum during the project, or two metres below a zero tide. Dredge material will be disposed at the Tsimpsean Peninsula disposal at sea site, in accordance with Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Disposal at Sea permit 4543-2-03744.

The completion of work is anticipated to be before February 15th, 2020, once finished the project will provide an entrance channel to the Harbour with minimum  width of 20m at a consistent depth of -3 chart datum.
