Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach addressing a question to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday |
In what was an unruly and at times heated Question Period Wednesday for the governing Liberals, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach joined in on the discussion on themes of the ongoing protests across the nation over a range of Indigenous issues.
The Member of Parliament offering his observations on the past history between the Wet'suwet'en and the Federal Government and issuing a call for the Prime Minister to travel to British Columbia to meet with the hereditary chiefs of the Wet'suwet'en.
"The protests that we are seeing tell us that Indigenous people have had enough of this government's empty promises. The Wet'suwet'en people have been patient, they waited decades for the Federal Government to meet with them in good faith on the question of their title and rights. Will this Prime Minister travel to Wet'suwet'en territory and personally sit down with the hereditary chiefs"-- Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach in Question Period Wednesday
In reply to the call from the Northwest MP, the Prime Minister did not commit to a trip to the Wet'suwet'en territory, but did make note of the past engagements between the Federal government and Wet'suwet'en officials, as well as the current discussions that are underway.
As we noted earlier today, Mr. Bachrach had provided for some expansive notes on the dispute in the Wet'suwet'en region yesterday, that as part of an emergency debate in the House of Commons that went late into the evening on Tuesday.
That debate set the tone for today, with the Prime Minister for the most part fielding the majority of the questions and comments from both the Opposition Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois members.
With MP's from both parties repeatedly calling for the government to enforce a removal of those currently on blockades on rail lines in Ontario, which have shut down the transit of goods across the nation.
For their part, members of the NDP and the Green Party supported the Liberal government's current approach to this point of more negotiation and more discussion with Indigenous representatives.
