750K in funding from Province for Metlakatla coastal erosion project
The Metlakatla First Nation was one of a number of British Columbia communities to receive funding on Monday for a range of flood mitigation projects around the province.
The announcements will see the 18 communities share in more than 12 million dollars in provincial emergency preparedness funding that is to be used towards the prevention, elimination or reduction of hazards.
Jennifer Rice, the Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness noted how the funding will help keep communities safer.
“We’re proud to invest in disaster mitigation and improved resilience for British Columbians across the province. This funding will help keep communities safer and improve outcomes in the event of an emergency situation.”
The Metlakatla project will see 750,000 dollars directed towards coastal erosion work to take place on the Beach 4 area of the community.
The only other Northwest community to benefit from Monday's funding was Telkwa, which received 740,000 dollars towards flood protection improvements along the Bulkley River.
