Highway 16 Closed at New Hazelton as protesters shift their blockade to only east-west highway route



Update: The highway was re-opened to traffic at 4:30 AM when the blockade was lifted by those that had set it up, that upon the release of those arrested earlier in the eveing.


With RCMP officers moving in on the CN rail line blockade near New Hazelton around 8PM on Monday evening, those that were not arrested and their supporters shifted their attention to nearby Highway 16, blocking the only east - west route between Prince Rupert and Smithers.




The RCMP have not released any details to this point related to their operations on the railway, or the subsequent situation that has developed on Highway 16.

Media accounts indicate that those blocking the road intend to remain at their barricade demanding the release of those Gitxsan members arrested earlier in the evening.
