Owing to conflicting cultural gatherings in the region, the Lax Kw'allams First Nation has postponed Saturday's planned solidarity Rally organized to show the solidarity of the Nine Allied Tsimshian Tribes when it comes to the proposed Lelu Island LNG development.
The event which was to take place at the North Coast Convention Centre on 1st Avenue West was to bring together representatives from across the Skeena River Corridor, with representation from as far east last Gitanyow, Gitxsan and Wet'suwet'en.
A number of hereditary chiefs, leaders and community members were to outline their collective oppositoin to any form of development on Lelu Island or Flora Bank that would have an imapct on their fisheries ecosystem.
Lax Kw'alaams Mayor Gary Reece, outlined the nature of the postponement and how they hope to attract even larger numbers when it is rescheduled.
“We are committed to hosting this event at a later date and to ensuring our members get the opportunity to attend a solidarity rally,” ... “We want to be inclusive and ensure full participation. Our members were very excited about this historic event and we understand its importance, so we will be hosting it at a later date that will allow for greater participation.”
Details on when the rally will be rescheduled are to be provided at a later date, through the Lax Kw'alaams First Nation website.
