Rupertites invited to dig into the food fare at Eat Street

City announces opening of Eat Street at the corner of Seventh Street
and Third West, directly behind Friendship House

The fencing is down, the lights are on for the Urbaloo and Uncle Robbie's is in place at Eat Street Square, with the City of Prince Rupert announcing on Wednesday that the new public gathering initiative for the corner of Seventh Street and Third Avenue West is now Open.

The project which ran into a few delays along the way to completion, was first proposed in 2021 and started with the city approving a spot for a new outdoor washroom facility, that as part of a partnership with Prince Rupert Aboriginal Community Services Society and the Federal Government through Service Canada.

The plan towards adding Food Trucks to the vision came along through last year, though an unexpected discovery on the site served to put a hold on development for a period of time, with the pause on construction moving through the summer and into the fall.

Things were back on track by February with electrical work and site preparation underway leading to the opening of this week.

“The Eat Street and public washroom project are one more small step we are taking to activate our 2030 Vision. The City had already been looking for opportunities to activate a lot in the downtown core, and took advantage of the opportunity when PRACSS approached us about opening a washroom to offer additional amenities and a dedicated space for local food trucks.” -- Mayor Lee Brain

So far, Uncle Robbie's Food Truck serves as the only dining option, though the city is hopeful of more vendors taking up placement as the months move ahead, with the City also planning for the placement of planters to make the location more inviting for those stopping by for bite to eat.

The Mayor issued the invitation to visit the new civic project through his social media stream on Wednesday.
